Year 4 Times Table Checking Exercise
18 June 2021 (by Mark Backhouse (M.Backhouse))
Next week, our Year 4 pupils will complete their multiplication check.
Over the past few years, the Department for Education have been trying to introduce a Multiplication (Times Table) Check for Year 4 pupils. The reason that this is aimed at Year 4 pupils is that the National Curriculum expects pupils to know all their times tables up 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4.
In 2019, we took part in the optional trial of this. It was due to become statutory for all pupils to complete this in Year 4 from 2021. However, due to school closures this academic year, it has once again been made optional for schools to complete.
This year, we are taking part in the optional exercise as it gives teachers, pupils and parents a useful benchmark to check if pupils know their times tables - a vital skill they will require to understand maths in Year 5.
Over the course of next week, our Year 4 pupils will take part in the exercise.
Further information for parents from the DfE can be found here and a useful document is attached: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/multiplication-tables-check-information-for-parents
Any support you can offer to help your pupils practice their x tables would be greatly appreciated. By using Times Table Rockstars, this is set out in a similar format to the check.
